Duck

Today, the world lost one of its most influential bass players, Donald "Duck" Dunn. RIP Duck.

Thanks to everyone who came out yesterday to the WMNF Tropical Heatwave! I had a great time, and thanks to Skye and all the folks at the Roosevelt 2.0 for their kind hospitality.

Tonight, Sunday May 13th, I'm playing at Natura Coffee and Tea in Orlando, FL. Let's hang out.

Ann

Happy Birthday to Ann Peebles, one of the best female singers to record for Hi Records in Memphis. She is best known for her singles, "I Can't Stand The Rain" and "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down", which she wrote with husband Don Bryant and Bernard "Bernie" Miller.

Levon

Words cannot express how much I think of this man as one of the greatest musicians ever, and one of my biggest inspirations. The man was seemingly made from music. He will be greatly missed. I am sorry I never got to see him in person.

Jake

"Everyone’s asked me that this morning, but I honestly have no real idea. I think the way people look at this band is out of my understanding. I either feel negatively about it or I don’t really have any opinion, so I can’t really answer that question in any way that’s going to make sense to a reader.

No one else has as much invested in this band as I do, so it’s pointless for me to even try going into how I feel about that and how they feel about it. I can’t really be bothered. I hope they like it, but beyond that, I just can’t talk about it. Do you know what I mean?"

- Jake Stone of Bluejuice, talking to Rohan Williams of Scene Magazine in a very frank interview. I used to know Jake on the Aussie band circuit, and his group Bluejuice have consistently been one of my most favourite Aussie bands. This interview is like watching a car crash, but it's interesting to hear someone speak frankly about struggling with depression and the sometimes unfulfilling nature of the music industry and being creative. I really hope he cheers up soon though. He's a very talented guy.

Earl

No-one could play the banjo quite like Earl, but everybody tried to.

RIP Earl Scruggs 1924-2012.

Montmorensy

This week is the birthday week of my dear friend Montmorensy (a.k.a. Paul Hankinson), who is something of a genius. He resides in Berlin, Germany, and if you're over there you might be fortunate enough to catch one of his shows.

Check out more of his music/sense of humour over at montmorensy.com.

Boss

Bruce Springsteen gave the keynote speech at SxSW in Austin, TX, this year. It's long, but he makes some darn good points. Well played, sir.

Wolf

Sam Phillips once said, "When I heard Howlin' Wolf, I said, 'This is for me. This is where the soul of a man never dies'".
